Music To Our Ears! Donor funds Kids Classics in Hospitals

The Community Foundation is delighted to announce, that through one of its private Donor funds it has committed €60,000 over three years to the Kids Classics project, run by the National Concert Hall. The grant will allow talented musicians visit the three main children’s hospitals in Ireland to work with the young patients at their own levels of ability, this may be to play their favourite TV tunes or to teach them some interesting facts about the lives and music of the great composers.

Each monthly visit will include a workshop in each hospital as well as ward visits to bring music to those in intensive care and acute wards that cannot visit the playrooms or schoolrooms during the workshops. Each hospital will be presented with an instrument box, iPod with speakers as well as specially selected CD’s and music storybooks, so that children can continue to explore the instruments and their sounds with their play therapists. The musicians will work closely with the play therapists staff and children over the 3 year programme to develop a special CD featuring themed music suitable to the various hospital environments. The project will engage a guest artist to assist with any narration involved. This will encourage and support the play therapists and school teachers continue to bring the therapeutic benefits of music to children and families during their hospital stays.
