The permanence of this fund distinguishes The Foundation from many other organisations, and it is one of our key goals to grow it into a substantially larger, sustainable fund, the income from which will develop community and voluntary initiatives throughout Ireland both now and in the future. September 2007: Philanthropy Seminar October 9th - The Philanthropy Journey

Would you like to learn more about philanthropy? This important seminar on a topic of growing interest in Ireland takes place on Tuesday, October 9th @ 8am at the Radisson SAS St Helen’s Hotel on the Stillorgan Road (just south of UCD). The hour long presentation will be followed by a short Q&A.

Our main speaker is John Rockett, Managing Director of AIB Private Banking and one of the most experienced wealth management professionals in Ireland. He will speak about the increasing role that philanthropy is playing in overall wealth management. Mary Lawlor is Chief Executive of the international award winning charity Front Line. She will focus on how philanthropy has transformed the organisation. The organisation’s best known benefactor is Denis O’Brien. Tina Roche will also speak briefly about how people, when starting their philanthropy journey can look at their motivations to frame their giving and how they might then establish a charitable structure. We would be delighted to see you on the day as it will provide a perfect introduction to this area. The format is very informal and anyone who has attended previous seminars has been highly impressed. Those present will also receive advance copies of the superb new Philanthropy Ireland ‘Guide to Giving’. You don’t have to be a Chuck Feeney or Bill Gates to be a philanthropist, why not see what you can do.

This is an invite only event, but if you have a particular interest in attending, please contact Niall O'Sullivan on 01 874 7354 for further details.

September 2007: Ireland’s Wealthy Urged to Help Double Philanthropy to €1 billion by 2010

The Community Foundation for Ireland has called for Ireland’s wealthiest individuals to lead the way in developing private philanthropy in Ireland. Tina Roche, Chief Executive of The Community Foundation, said “If Ireland’s wealthiest citizens contributed at the same level as Britain we would more than double our rate of giving to over €1 billion annually and our entire not-for-profit sector would see a huge expansion in the opportunities available to them”.

Speaking at the launch of its inaugural Philanthropist of the Year Awards, which will take place in Dublin on 15th November, The Community Foundation pointed out that:

  • Ireland’s accumulated wealth now stands at approximately €804 billion, up 19% from 2005.
  • Excluding the value of principal private residences there are more than 33,000 millionaires in Ireland.
  • In 2000 there were fewer than 10,000.
  • Ireland donates only 0.34% of GNP to the not-for-profit sector compared to 0.71% in the UK and 2.1% in the United States.
  • More than €3 billion worth of property is transferred by Irish people through their wills every year.
  • 60% of income to the not-for-profit sector comes from the State.

Ms Roche said that “With such a marked increase in net wealth in this country over the last fifteen years, Ireland now has a unique opportunity and responsibility to build an enduring philanthropic culture that would see all levels of society benefit.”
