Transferring a Private Foundation’s or Charitable Trust’s Assets
There are relatively few private charitable trusts and foundations in Ireland, at least in the public domain. It would be interesting to know if they are truly making an impact. Are they grant-making? Are they doing so effectively? Are the board members / trustees comfortable handling the level of administration and reporting involved? If there are any issues of under-performance or time pressures for those involved, or if a different grant-making direction is being considered, it may be worth getting some advice from The Community Foundation. The Foundation provides a simple, cost effective mechanism to increase the scope and impact of your existing giving. We have funded thousands of projects in Ireland and beyond on behalf of our donors and partners - many of these projects lie below the public charitable radar and can struggle to find support. It is this knowledge and reach into communities and causes that we offer to grant making bodies. We don't just work with dormant and frustrated trusts, but with grant makers who want to use our expertise to realise their maximum potential.
Three simple options to consider are to:
- Meet community foundation staff to discuss pertinent issues generally and get guidance in relation to, for example the most pressing needs in Ireland today, the scale and type of grants which may be most impactful and how to implement reporting and assessment procedures. We are happy to provide this as a free once off consultation and while you may opt to avail of community foundation services at a later stage, there is no onus on you do so as a result of such a meeting.
- If relevant, discuss the possibility of partnering with The Community Foundation for Ireland who can administer a grants programme on your behalf. The Community Foundation for Ireland is already doing so for some organisations.
- Transfer the assets into a new Donor Advised Fund at The Community Foundation to ensure that the goals and aspirations of your foundation / trust are managed and administered effectively and within an agreed timescale. Where an endowment is in the tens of thousands or low millions (but there is no upper limit), The Community Foundation is a particularly relevant vehicle.
You may wish to discuss these options with your advisor and you may also like them to attend any meeting with you also.
