Women in Philanthropy- Breakfast Seminar
22 June 2010The Community Foundation for Ireland and Philanthropy Ireland are delighted to announce the upcoming Women in Philanthropy event to follow on from the sucessful symposium held in April.
When: Tuesday, June 22 @ 8am – 9.30
Where: Chartered Accountants Ireland, 47-49 Pearse St, Dublin 2
We are delighted that the UK’s first Philanthropy Ambassador, Dame Stephanie Shirley will address this event. She has an amazing life story and is passionate about philanthropy and the vital role women have to play in its development. She originally arrived in Britain during World War II as an unaccompanied child refugee. In 1962, Dame Steve founded a software company, F.I. Group and was concerned with creating work opportunities for women with dependents. Indeed until the introduction of the Equal Opportunities Act in 1975, F.I. only employed women. She also adopted the name "Steve" to help her in the male-dominated business world.
Dame Stephanie was awarded an OBE in 1980 and was made Dame Commander (DBE) in 2000. She has donated over £50m of her wealth from the sale of F.I. Group, to charity during retirement and has established her own foundation with a focus on autism.
Also speaking is Sandara Kelso-Robb, Executive Director of the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Northern Ireland. As well as working full-time in philanthropy, Sandara has organised a Women’s Giving Circle among 20 women in Northern Ireland. Women’s Giving Circles have been described as the new book clubs, such is their growing popularity worldwide.
