Dame Stephanie Shirley has an amazing life story and is passionate about philanthropy and the vital role advisors have to play in its development – and in better serving their clients. She has convened many meetings of professional advisors in the UK who she describes as ‘pivotal’ in this process.
She originally arrived in Britain during World War II as an unaccompanied child refugee. In 1962, Dame Steve founded a software company, F.I. Group and was concerned with creating work opportunities for women with dependents. Indeed until the introduction of the Equal Opportunities Act in 1975, F.I. only employed women. She also adopted the name "Steve" to help her in the male-dominated business world. Dame Stephanie was awarded an OBE in 1980 and was made Dame Commander (DBE) in 2000. She has donated over £50million of her wealth from the sale of F.I. Group, to charity during retirement and has established her own foundation with a focus on autism.
We will also have a panel discussion and feature Irish case studies to illuminate how different types of clients can be more strategic with their wealth and how and when it is appropriate for advisors to ‘have that philanthropy discussion’. The panel features Eamonn Siggins, Chief Executive of The Institute of Certified Public Accountants; Tina Roche, Chief Executive of The Community Foundation for Ireland; Martin Phelan, Partner and Head of William Fry Tax Advisors and Deputy President, Irish Tax Institute and Eoin Kennelly, Director, Kennelly Tax Advisers.
